Now that you've got the free shit I'm gonna ramble for a minute, humor me...
For the last year or so B. Clay Moore and I have put a lot of blood sweat and tears into producing a meager four issues of our Image comic's series THE EXPATRIATE (see above). A whole year to do 90 pages of a story. Makes us seem lazy doesn't it?
It seems incomprehensible that in the past year there would be more 24 hour work days, blood shot eyes and wobbly hands than I can count in my lifetime to produce only these four issues. But there were. There've been more ups and downs than a hooker on a rollercoaster.
Expat was made 100% Indy. No glory, no promised paychecks, no pain, no gain. We're not special because of it. It's the same process that almost every creator not working with the money at the big two goes through. A lot of love, a lot of belief and the willingness to jump out of an airplane knowing that the chute probably won't open.
But this isn't a sob story. And it's really not me beating my chest to the world to say how underappreciated we are and how much of a fool you are for not reading it. The fact is there should be a lot more of this book by now. A WHOLE lot more. I make no excuses for my part in that... I screwed up. I took on too much too early. I overestimated myself and what I could do given where I was in my life. Shit happened. Believe me shit happened. Shit's still happening. Things I couldn't control, some I could have. But it's not going to stop. But I think I've learned. And in the process I think I helped put out one entertaining book that's continuing to get better and better. I hope you'll feel the same way...
Because in the spirit of that insanity and that confidence I mentioned above... we're giving it all away for free. Just for the simple fact that we can. Because we made this thing with love and sweat and tears and balls the size of Jupiter.... and we don't think enough of you are reading it. (See we're not completely made of gold, we have ulterior motives :))
We want you to read it. We want you to give it a shot all the way through. And if you enjoy it, we want you to tell people. And if you really enjoy it we want you to buy the last two issues that will be coming along sometime in the next few months. And if you really, really enjoy it we want you to hunt down the back issues... and demand a big fat awesome trade with tons of shit in it, hell name your dog Jack Dexter and your first born Conrad. I think you get the point.
You've got no excuse now. It's going to be out there for you and all thats stopping you is the click of a button. Easier than hitting that button with the burger on it at work. A few pages a day, every weekday for the next couple of months, slowly at first and more at a time as we get closer to the next issue. Just keep reading, because where you think it's headed... it's not.
Along the way I'll probably throw in some commentary about it. Maybe some extras, DVD style. We'll see how it goes.
I'll also be continuing to update my regular blog here, with sketches and rambling ego sessions, the whole nine. But I'm not going to ask you to wade through that unless you want to. If you want Expat.... it'll be here. At the top of the page. All you have to do is click.
I promise not to be so high and mighty next time. And if you'll do me a favor... pass these banners around until I get the time to make a nicer one:

Its not about being underappreciated, its just that for all the work, living and breathing and sacrificing, it's hard to reconcile that at the end, nothing really changed. The sky is still blue, and we're back to square one lookinfg at a white sheet of paper with the spectre of paying biulls looming over you. It's heart breaking at times.
I hope the free comic thing works.
In the end though. This as been worth it for me even if people don't respond to this giveaway. Doing this book taught me so much that I plan on applying in the future. It's opened Pandora's box :)
How are things going for you work wise? Clean Living ?

Otherwise, I have 9-5 at a children's book company to pay the bills, so i'm not hurting for cash. Unfortunately, it gobbles up all my prime comic-making time.
